Delta Govt Assures Workers of Safety as NLC Stages Peaceful Protest Against Insecurity

The Delta State Government has reassured workers and residents of its unwavering commitment to the protection of lives and property, stressing that security remains the cornerstone of effective governance.

This assurance was given on Wednesday at Government House, Asaba, by the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Hon. Johnson Erijo, while receiving members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Delta State Council, who staged a peaceful protest as part of a nationwide demonstration against rising insecurity in the country.

Speaking on behalf of Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, Erijo acknowledged the concerns raised by the workers, noting that the “primary essence of government is the security and welfare of its citizens,” and emphasized that no responsible government would be indifferent to the safety of its people.

While describing Delta State as relatively peaceful, the Chief of Staff said the protest was a solidarity action with other parts of the country facing severe security challenges. He added that the Federal Government was fully aware of the situation, pointing out that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu inherited some of the security issues currently confronting the nation.

Erijo noted that efforts were ongoing at the federal level to address the disturbing security challenges, assuring that the Delta State Government remained committed to supporting initiatives aimed at strengthening peace and stability.

He further conveyed Governor Oborevwori’s message to the protesters, reiterating that peace and security form a key pillar of the administration’s MORE Agenda. According to him, without a secure environment, the delivery of democratic dividends would be impossible.

The Chief of Staff assured the workers that their concerns had been clearly received and would be communicated to the appropriate authorities, including the President. He also commended the NLC for the orderly and peaceful conduct of the protest, describing it as a demonstration of maturity and patriotism.

Earlier, the Secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Delta State Council, Comrade Acrobat Enekhawore, expressed deep concern over the impact of insecurity on Nigerians, noting that it had disrupted daily life and eroded public confidence nationwide.

The peaceful protest, which formed part of a nationwide action by the NLC, concluded with a call for stronger collaboration between the state and federal governments to restore security, protect lives and property, safeguard education, and secure the future of the nation.
