2027: Ibori, Omo-Agege Back Oborevwori as Re-election Bid Gains Momentum

Political alignments ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Delta State appear to be shifting in favour of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori following public affirmations by two key political figures—former Governor James Ibori and immediate past Deputy Senate President, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege.

The endorsements are seen as easing lingering tensions that followed the 2023 election and consolidating support around the incumbent, particularly in Delta Central Senatorial District, the political base of both Ibori and Omo-Agege.

Speaking at a recent event in Warri, Senator Omo-Agege described Governor Oborevwori as the “undisputed leader” of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State. The comment was regarded as a significant signal of unity within the party. The Governor, who was present at the event, said there was no rift between him and the former Deputy Senate President.

“Many of you don’t know that we talk from time to time. He is my brother and there’s no problem between us,” Oborevwori said.

In a separate development that drew considerable attention, former Governor Ibori publicly commended Oborevwori’s performance in office and endorsed him for a second term beginning in 2027. He also expressed the hope that the incumbent would advance to a higher national role after completing two terms in office in 2031. The endorsement from Ibori, widely regarded as a foremost political leader in the state, was viewed across political circles as a major boost to Oborevwori’s re-election prospects.

Governor Oborevwori, who assumed office on May 29, 2023, has maintained a focus on infrastructure and social services across the state. His administration cites road construction, urban renewal projects and efforts at debt reduction among its achievements. Observers say these projects have helped to reduce initial doubts about his capacity to govern and have strengthened public confidence in his leadership.

The Governor has also been noted for his outreach to political stakeholders, often stressing the need for respect for leaders and inclusive governance. “You must recognize them, give them respect and make them relevant,” he has said at public engagements.

With both Ibori and Omo-Agege now publicly aligned with the incumbent, analysts believe the political landscape in Delta State may witness reduced tensions as the 2027 election approaches, though opposition parties are expected to mount their own challenges.

For now, the endorsements are being interpreted as a vote of confidence in Oborevwori’s leadership and a sign of growing consensus among key political actors in the state.
