NIGERIA AT 65: Oborevwori Urges Nigerians To Avoid Divisive Tendencies, Embrace Unity

ASABA – Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has called on Nigerians to embrace unity and shun divisive tendencies as the nation marks its 65th Independence Anniversary.

Speaking at the Cenotaph, Asaba, during the anniversary celebration on Wednesday, the governor, who was represented by his deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, stressed the need for Nigerians to honour the sacrifices of the country’s founding fathers, reflect on its journey, and renew their commitment to building a prosperous future.

Governor Oborevwori noted that the true strength of Delta State and Nigeria lies in the people, urging citizens to embrace “independence from ethnic division and rivalry, independence from dependency through hard work, enterprise and creativity, and independence from forces that divide us.”

He described Independence Day as a time to “remember, reflect and renew” — remembering the sacrifices of heroes, reflecting on the nation’s journey, and renewing commitment to unity, peace and progress.

The governor congratulated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on the anniversary and prayed for wisdom and strength for him to lead Nigeria through challenges to prosperity, peace and security.

Highlighting his administration’s achievements under the MORE Agenda, Oborevwori said Delta State was investing heavily in infrastructure, health, education, and job creation. He listed ongoing projects in road construction, flyovers, drainage schemes, flood control, hospital upgrades, ICT hubs, and social welfare programmes.

According to him, these initiatives are designed to connect communities, open opportunities, improve healthcare, empower youths, and ensure no one is left behind.

While acknowledging democracy allows room for criticism, the governor urged Deltans to focus on constructive engagement rather than negativity. He appealed for continued support, warning against distractions from “critics who thrive on mischief.”

On security, Oborevwori expressed satisfaction with progress recorded, particularly in making waterways safe and enhancing collaboration with security agencies. He commended traditional rulers, religious leaders, youths, and security operatives for their roles in maintaining peace and stability.

He further urged youths to channel their energy into positive ventures, described them as “change makers of today,” and called on the private sector to partner with government in building industries and creating jobs.

“As we celebrate 65 years of Nigeria’s independence, let us renew our faith in God and in one another. Let us hold on to peace, unity, security and justice. That is the only way to build a stronger Delta and a greater Nigeria,” the governor said.

The ceremony featured inspection of the Guard of Honour, match past by military and paramilitary formations, and was attended by top government functionaries, traditional rulers and other dignitaries.
