Hon. Akpososo Oghenekaro (Mimikay), a respected leader in Delta State, has commended Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for his steadfast dedication to revolutionizing healthcare delivery in the state. The Governor’s commitment was reaffirmed during a recent courtesy visit by the executive members of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Delta State chapter, led by its Chairman, Dr. Israel Adaigho, at the Government House in Asaba. Oborevwori outlined his administration’s transformative initiatives, which include significant investments in healthcare infrastructure, state-of-the-art medical equipment, and the welfare of medical personnel.
These efforts, aligned with the MORE Agenda, have positioned Delta State as a leader in healthcare innovation in Nigeria. Hon. Oghenekaro’s praise underscores the impact of these initiatives on improving the lives of Deltans and sets a hopeful tone for the future of healthcare in the state.
During the visit, Governor Oborevwori highlighted several landmark achievements that demonstrate his administration’s focus on strengthening healthcare delivery.
A key initiative is the procurement of advanced medical equipment to enhance diagnostic and treatment capabilities across Delta State. The administration has acquired eight dialysis machines, strategically distributed to Asaba Specialist Hospital, Central Hospital Warri, and Delta State University Teaching Hospital (DELSUTH) Oghara. These machines are critical for patients with kidney failure, providing life-saving treatment that was previously inaccessible to many residents. Additionally, three Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machines—one for each of Delta State’s three senatorial districts—have been acquired to ensure equitable access to advanced diagnostics. These MRI machines enable accurate diagnosis of complex conditions such as neurological disorders and cancers, reducing the need for medical tourism.
The Governor also announced the acquisition of Computed Tomography (CT) scan machines and echocardiography equipment, further bolstering the state’s capacity to address a wide range of medical needs. The trauma and orthopaedic unit at Central Hospital, Warri, has been upgraded, positioning it as a regional hub for specialized care. Hon. Oghenekaro praised these investments, stating, “Governor Oborevwori’s focus on equipping our hospitals with modern technology is a game-changer. These advancements ensure that Deltans can access world-class healthcare without leaving the state, saving lives and reducing financial burdens.”
Another cornerstone of the administration’s healthcare agenda is the Delta State Contributory Health Insurance Scheme, which has enrolled over three million residents—the highest in Nigeria. This achievement reflects the administration’s commitment to achieving universal health coverage, a key pillar of the MORE Agenda.
The scheme reduces out-of-pocket expenses, making healthcare more affordable for low-income and rural communities. Additionally, pregnant women and children under five receive free healthcare in state-owned hospitals, addressing Nigeria’s high maternal and neonatal mortality rates. Hon. Oghenekaro lauded this initiative, noting, “The Governor’s compassion for vulnerable groups, particularly mothers and young children, is evident in the free healthcare program.
This is a bold step toward health equity and a healthier Delta State.”
Recognizing the importance of a skilled and motivated workforce, Governor Oborevwori has prioritized the welfare of medical personnel. The administration has implemented the new Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) and Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS), improving remuneration for doctors and healthcare workers. Residency training funds have been paid to doctors, supporting their professional development and ensuring a robust healthcare workforce. Emergency medical services have also been strengthened, enhancing the state’s ability to respond to critical health situations.
Hon. Oghenekaro emphasized the significance of these measures, stating, “By investing in our medical professionals, Governor Oborevwori is building a sustainable healthcare system that will serve Deltans for generations.”
Addressing concerns raised by the NMA about manpower shortages, the Governor assured the Association that his administration would take proactive steps to tackle this challenge. While specific measures were not outlined, the commitment reflects an understanding of the need to retain and recruit skilled healthcare workers to sustain the state’s healthcare gains. As an immediate gesture of support, Oborevwori approved the release of a bus to aid the NMA’s operations, facilitating outreach, training, and advocacy activities. Hon. Oghenekaro described this as “a testament to the Governor’s collaborative approach, fostering partnerships that strengthen our healthcare system.”
