IPOB Condemns Calumny, Rejects Imaginary Government and Demands Freedom for Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu

The Head of the Fourth Administration of the Directorate of State (DOS) of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Chris Nwaọgụ, has reiterated that the group’s priorities remain the freedom of its leader, Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, and the restoration of Biafra.

Nwaọgụ made the position known in a weekly address dated Sunday, October 4, 2026, in which he addressed the controversy surrounding the Sokoto Declaration, allegations against Kanu, his ongoing legal battle, international diplomatic activities, IPOB’s asset-recovery efforts, communal violence in Anam and Aguleri, and the organisation’s position on its leadership structure.

IPOB Rejects So-Called Biafran Government

Nwaọgụ said IPOB respects the right of individuals to pursue the Biafran cause through peaceful means but rejected any attempt to establish a government for Biafra before the territory becomes an independent sovereign state.

According to him, individuals are free to establish organisations or structures of their choice, but IPOB, under the leadership of Kanu, will not recognise any such government.

He maintained that Kanu has repeatedly stated that he would not lead Biafra after its restoration, stressing that the people of Biafra should freely elect their leaders in an independent Biafra.

Nwaọgụ argued that if IPOB were to establish a government before independence, it could amount to imposing one person's will on the people.

He urged those interested in leading pro-Biafra organisations to conduct themselves with integrity, study the issues, prepare themselves and offer themselves to the people, saying that leadership should ultimately be determined through a free election.

He warned against individuals declaring themselves President, Deputy President, Governor, Deputy Governor or Prime Minister of Biafra before the territory has achieved sovereignty.

Nwaọgụ also alleged that some individuals with links to the Nigerian government were now claiming positions in what he described as a purported Biafran government, saying such developments should not distract Biafrans.

IPOB Says Kanu Co-Signed Sokoto Declaration

The statement also addressed claims that Kanu did not approve, authorise, participate in or co-sign the Sokoto Declaration.

Nwaọgụ rejected the claim, saying Kanu's Special Counsel had publicly announced that Kanu authorised the disclosure that he had worked with Mike Arnold and that both men drafted the declaration together.

He further stated that the published document identifies “Mazi Nnamdi Okwu Kanu & Earthshaker Mike Arnold” as joint issuers.

According to the statement, under “The Signatories,” Kanu is identified as “Co-Signatory · Prisoner of Conscience, Sokoto,” and is described as a collaborator and co-signatory.

Nwaọgụ therefore argued that claims that no such document exists amount to a denial of a publicly released document.

He stressed that Kanu does not recognise any government at the present time.

The DOS leader said the political future of Biafrans should be determined by Biafrans through what he described as a free, fair and internationally credible process — a United Nations-supervised referendum.

He maintained that until the people freely express their will, there cannot be a legitimate Biafran government deriving authority from the people.

“Attaching the word ‘government’ to a name does not make it a government,” the statement said, while describing government as a responsibility that should not be trivialised.

Nwaọgụ said Biafrans would decide who governs them if Biafra becomes an independent sovereign nation, adding that “agitation is not sovereignty.”

He reiterated that IPOB’s objective remains a referendum and called on Biafrans to allow the people to speak and decide.

IPOB Accuses Nigerian Government, Politicians of Campaign Against Kanu

Nwaọgụ accused the Nigerian government and some Igbo politicians of mounting what he described as a campaign against Kanu.

He alleged that the objective was to damage Kanu's reputation and weaken his influence.

The statement attributed the campaign to members of the expelled Third Administration, individuals allegedly acting as agents of external interests, and people claiming to represent a purported “Biafra government” that, according to IPOB, was not elected.

Nwaọgụ described those individuals as “agent provocateurs” and alleged that their activities were intended to create confusion within the movement.

He urged IPOB supporters not to amplify their messages or engage them on their terms.

The statement pointed to Kanu's birthday celebrations around the world, particularly in Biafraland, as evidence that his supporters remained committed to him.

It said years of detention had not broken the relationship between Kanu and his supporters and argued that propaganda would not do so.

IPOB Mentions Israel, US and UN Engagement

Nwaọgụ also disclosed what he described as ongoing international activities concerning the Biafran issue.

He said Israeli members of the Knesset had taken steps to liaise with United States senators towards strengthening an Israel-US parliamentary alliance on the issue of Biafra.

He said several developments were taking place but could not be disclosed until the necessary agreements were in place.

The statement also referred to a letter by Israeli Knesset member MK Afef Abed to the United Nations demanding implementation of “Opinion 25/2022.”

Nwaọgụ said the work would continue, adding that the Fourth Administration was the final administration and would “lead home.”

IPOB Challenges Kanu Conviction

The statement strongly criticised the handling of Kanu's appeal and the legal basis of his conviction.

Nwaọgụ argued that the delay in listing Kanu's appeal went beyond ordinary bureaucracy and raised questions about the case.

He claimed that Kanu's November 20, 2025 conviction was based on a terrorism law that had already been repealed.

The statement invoked Section 36(12) of the Nigerian Constitution, arguing that where there is no written law in force defining an offence and prescribing its penalty, a person cannot be convicted under that law.

Nwaọgụ also cited a statement attributed to Justice James Omotosho during proceedings:

“If there is no written law, then you cannot be convicted.”

According to the statement, Justice Omotosho made that comment 16 days before convicting Kanu under the law whose repeal had been brought before the court.

Nwaọgụ alleged that the judge failed to apply the statutory transition created by the National Assembly in the 2022 law and refused to give effect to the repeal.

He further noted that the judge was subsequently elevated towards the Court of Appeal.

The statement said Biafrans could draw their own conclusions from those developments and argued that the circumstances raised questions about the rule of law and the integrity of Nigeria's justice system.

Nwaọgụ called for Kanu's appeal to be listed and heard in open court, repeatedly demanding:

“Show us the law.

List the appeal.

Hear it.”

IPOB Continues Asset-Recovery Efforts

The DOS leader said IPOB's asset-recovery efforts were continuing, adding that the organisation was pursuing litigation and would continue taking what he described as appropriate legal action against individuals involved in campaigns of calumny based on what he called unsubstantiated and malicious allegations.

He said the asset-recovery process in Australia was moving slowly but added that IPOB's lawyers had assured the organisation that litigation was not far away.

Nwaọgụ also addressed the closure of an IPOB Worldwide account in Germany.

According to him, the account was shut down by the bank following issues surrounding the alleged forging of Madam Nnennaya Anya's signature.

He claimed that IPOB funds remained in the account and said the organisation would pursue their recovery.

He also said allegations and blackmail directed at people who had been working to secure IPOB assets had been exposed, adding that the organisation would not abandon assets belonging to the movement.

Protests Planned in Washington and Brussels

Nwaọgụ announced that protests were scheduled to take place in Washington, D.C., and Brussels in the coming months.

He said the objective was to demonstrate the strength and determination of the IPOB movement internationally and to press Kanu's demand.

He reiterated that referendum remained IPOB's central demand and urged supporters to turn out, organise and make the demand visible.

IPOB Condemns Anam and Aguleri Killings

The statement also addressed killings and violence in Anam and Aguleri.

Nwaọgụ described the situation as shameful and expressed concern that communities were fighting each other while, in his words, failing to confront broader problems affecting the people.

He said land disputes and boundary disagreements had resulted in deaths, destruction of property and the closure of markets in Anambra East.

He called for an immediate end to the violence, arguing that the killing of Biafrans by Biafrans was a tragedy.

According to him, no community benefits from the conflict and only those opposed to the interests of the people benefit from the violence.

He urged the affected communities to return to dialogue and peace and redirect their energy towards Kanu's freedom and the restoration of Biafra.

Fourth Administration Calls for Return to IPOB

Nwaọgụ maintained that there was one IPOB family, one command and one Supreme Leader, whom he identified as Kanu.

He appealed to people who had moved into what he described as confusion, personal titles and parallel structures to return to IPOB.

He said the Fourth Administration was continuing work on Kanu's appeal, the international front, the welfare of detained members, the recovery of IPOB assets and what he described as discipline within the struggle.

He urged supporters to support IPOB's lawyers, detained members, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), and desks working in Jerusalem, Washington and Brussels.

He also called for discipline and warned supporters against allowing anyone to provoke violence or hijack the struggle.

The statement said IPOB's boycott position remained in place, while further details would be released when they could no longer be “stolen, distorted or renamed.”

Kanu Must Be Released, IPOB Says

In closing, Nwaọgụ thanked those supporting Kanu at home and abroad and those who had continued to support what he described as the Biafran mandate.

He demanded the immediate and unconditional release of Kanu and called for his appeal to be listed and heard.

The statement ended with the repeated call:

“Show us the law.

List the appeal.

Hear it.”

Nwaọgụ also offered prayers for Kanu, his family, those injured in the Anam and Aguleri violence, the families of those who died, and Biafrans supporting what he described as the struggle for justice.

He concluded by declaring that Biafra lives, that Biafrans remain one family and that the struggle continues.

The statement was signed by Mazi Chris Nwaọgụ, Head of the Fourth Administration, Directorat

e of State (DOS), Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), dated Sunday, October 4, 2026.
